Life Insurance

Life changes.
Protect what matters through it.

The right life insurance can help the people you love stay steady if you're no longer there to provide for them. New Tides Insurance explains term, whole life, and indexed universal life (IUL) coverage in plain language, so you can choose protection that fits your family and your budget.

Why it matters

A promise that keeps working for your family.

Life insurance is a contract with an insurance company. You pay premiums, and the insurer agrees to pay a sum of money, called the death benefit, to the people you name if you pass away while the policy is in force. Usually paid as a lump sum, it gives your family time and choices during a difficult season.

  • Everyday household costs

Groceries, utilities, childcare, and the monthly bills your income covers today.

  • The mortgage or rent

Helping your family stay in the home they know, without rushing big decisions.

  • Education

Keeping school and college plans within reach for children or grandchildren.

  • Final expenses

Funeral costs, final medical bills, and debts, so they don't fall to loved ones.

Coverage options

Three ways to protect
the people who count on you.

Term life is temporary: it covers a set number of years. Whole life and indexed universal life are permanent: they're designed to last your lifetime as long as the policy stays in force, and they build cash value. For the same death benefit, permanent coverage generally costs more.

Temporary

Term Life Insurance

Coverage for a fixed period, often 10, 20, or 30 years. If you pass away during the term, your beneficiaries receive the death benefit. When the term ends, coverage stops unless your policy lets you renew or convert it.

  • Protection for a chosen number of years
  • Usually the lowest premium for the amount of coverage
  • No cash value
  • Some policies can convert to permanent coverage

Good to know: buying new coverage after a term ends usually costs more, because premiums reflect your age and health at that time.

Worth considering if you need protection for a defined stretch, like while children are growing up or a mortgage is being paid down, and want manageable premiums.

Discuss term life
Permanent

Whole Life Insurance

Lifelong coverage with premiums that are typically set when you buy the policy and stay level. Part of what you pay builds cash value at a guaranteed rate, which you may be able to borrow against or withdraw later.

  • Coverage for life while required premiums are paid
  • Level premiums that don't rise with age
  • Cash value with guaranteed growth
  • Some policies may pay dividends, which are not guaranteed

Good to know: loans and withdrawals reduce cash value and the death benefit and may have tax consequences. Guarantees depend on the insurer's ability to pay claims.

Worth considering if you want coverage that won't expire, value predictable costs, or plan to leave an inheritance or cover final expenses.

Permanent · Flexible

Indexed Universal Life (IUL)

IUL is a form of universal life insurance: permanent coverage with premiums you can adjust within limits. Its cash value earns interest based partly on a stock market index, but your money isn't invested in the market directly; the insurer uses a crediting formula.

  • Flexible premiums and, in many policies, an adjustable death benefit
  • A floor, often 0%, keeps credited interest from going negative
  • Caps and participation rates limit credited growth and can change
  • Policy charges and cost of insurance come out of cash value

Good to know: an underfunded policy, or lower credited interest than expected, may require higher premiums or could lapse. Illustrations are projections, not promises.

Worth considering if you want permanent coverage with room to adjust payments over time, and you're comfortable reviewing the policy regularly.

Choosing coverage

Four questions
to bring to
the conversation.

There's no single right amount of coverage. Thinking these through ahead of time helps shape a policy around your life instead of a rule of thumb.

Talk through your answers
  1. Who relies on you?

A partner, children, aging parents, or a business partner. Picture who would feel the loss of your income, or the care you provide day to day.

  2. What do you owe and plan for?

A mortgage balance, car loans, credit cards, future tuition, and the everyday cost of running your household.

  3. How long do you need protection?

Until the kids are grown, until the mortgage is paid off, or for life. Your answer often points toward term, permanent, or a mix of both.

  4. What premium feels comfortable?

Coverage only helps if you can keep it. A premium that fits your budget now and later matters as much as the benefit amount.

Factors affecting cost

What shapes your premium.

Every application is priced individually. These are the factors insurers usually weigh most, so you know what to expect before the conversation starts.

  • Age

Applying younger generally means lower premiums.

  • Health & history

Current health and personal or family history affect your rate.

  • Tobacco & nicotine

Smoking and vaping typically raise premiums.

  • Work & activities

Higher-risk jobs and hobbies, like diving or flying, may add cost.

  • Type of policy

Permanent coverage costs more than term for the same benefit.

  • Amount, term & riders

Bigger benefits, longer terms, and add-on riders cost more.

Ask how these apply to you

No pricing is shown here, because every premium depends on underwriting.

Term life covers a set number of years and has no cash value, which usually makes it the more affordable way to get a larger death benefit. Permanent life insurance, which includes whole life and universal life, is designed to last your lifetime as long as the policy stays in force, and it builds cash value. For the same amount of coverage, it typically costs more.
