Basic Cruise/Crew Standard

Get ready to chart your course on the water with our Basic Cruise/Crew Standard course. These 5-day liveaboard sailing lessons in the Gulf Islands are just the adventure you have been waiting for. This course offers two certifications:

1. Basic Crew Standard

No prior sailing experience? No problem! This standard is perfect for those new to the water. In this program, you’ll learn all the technical skills needed to assist the skipper effectively.

2. Basic Cruising Standard

If you have some sailing experience and are ready to take the helm, this standard is your next challenge. You’ll practice key maneuvers, safety protocols, and navigation techniques, demonstrating your ability to boldly lead and operate a sailing vessel.

1. Basic Crew Standard Overview

It equips you with the foundational skills to assist the skipper and participate as a competent crew member.

Key Learning Objectives

  • Understand and practice essential safety procedures
  • Learn the basics of standing and running rigging, sail hoisting, trimming, and reefing techniques.
  • Practice handling ropes, fenders, and anchoring techniques to assist in docking and mooring
  • Develop a basic understanding of marine weather and its impact on sailing.
  • Learn to tie essential knots used in sailing operations.

2. Basic Cruising Standard Overview

It prepares you to act as the skipper of a sailing vessel, confidently managing both the boat and the crew.

Prerequisites

  • Some sailing experience is required
  • Pleasure Craft Operator Certificate (PCOC)*

Key Learning Objectives

  • Learn to coordinate and assume responsibility for the boat and crew confidently.
  • Master sail selection, trimming, and positioning for varying conditions.
  • Refine techniques for docking, mooring, and handling the boat under motorized power.
  • Understand and practice managing onboard emergencies, including man-overboard recovery and fire prevention.
  • Learn to read nautical charts, interpret tides and currents, and plan safe routes.
  • Understand and apply the rules of the road to prevent collisions at sea.
  • Deepen your knowledge of marine weather, tides, and currents to make informed decisions on the water.
